Flying Fortress Flies With Oregon Aero

"I was so impressed with the seat cushions that I bought an Oregon Aero portable seat cushion to use when I fly Airliners at work. Also, the B-17 is very loud inside. Wearing a headset for six hours can be painful. I upgraded my headset with the Oregon Aero comfort kit — and wow! No more headaches."Tim Hahn

Oregon Aero ULTRA II™ Custom Seat Cushions for the crew in the B-17 Flying Fortress of the Lone Star Flight Museum, Galveston, Texas.
B-17 Pilot George Hartigan tries out the Oregon Aero Custom Seat Cushions.

"The Lone Star Flight Museum flies a WWII vintage B-17 Flying Fortress to airshows and events all over North America, with many of the flights six hours or longer. The WWII era seats weren’t designed for crew comfort, but fortunately, Oregon Aero had a solution for the seating problems.
"The Oregon Aero cushions feel and look great! On the long flights we don’t feel as fatigued as we used to. There are no more cries of ‘oh, my aching back’ from the pilots and crew. And the high quality upholstery is cool in the hot summers." — Tim Hahn, Captain and Ralph Royce, Captain, B-17 "Thunderbird." Ralph also is Director of the Lone Star Flight Museum.

Military & Government Customers Say Thanks

“I was deployed to Iraq during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I know…there are many military members using your product, but I must say it is the best purchase I have ever made! I have had the system for almost two years, and it has been awesome! Through countless hours of training, convoy operations and recent combat, it really made life in those situations much more comfortable.”
— Cpl. N.R., USMC

"I have fallen in love with the comfort and fitting of the BLSS® kit. I can't forget the smiles on men and women's faces once they donned their helmet with the BLSS® kit and no longer had to live with the constant knots and pain throughout the day in Iraq. Your attention to soldiers and their comfort has made our job a lot easier. I can't thank you enough for your product."
D. S., Combat Engineer

"I want to commend you on a great product you have with the BLSS® kit Helmet Liner. I 'inherited' one from a soldier exiting the military and it has been wonderful to wear. Though it is very well used, it is still far better than the one I was issued. I no longer dread putting on my Kevlar as it is no longer painful. I swear you put helium in the pads because it feels as if my helmet got lighter. My Battalion Commander recently saw me wearing the BLSS® kit and asked me what it was. After I explained it, he wanted to wear it and see how it felt. Needless to say, I was not willing to give up my helmet without a fight! Luckily, my helmet was a different size but he still was intrigued enough to task me with coming up with two sets for himself and his S4 to evaluate before we purchase them for the rest of the Battalion... Thank you for making such a high quality piece of equipment and God bless us all!"

Sgt. J.S., U. S. Army

"I am currently serving active duty in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I know there are many military members using your BLSS® kit, but I must say...it is the best purchase I have ever made! I have had the system for almost two years, and it has been awesome! Through countless hours of training, convoy operations and recent combat, it really made life in those situations much more comfortable..."
Cpl. N. M., U. S. Marine Corps

"I want to compliment you on the design and performance of your BLSS® Soldier Helmet Upgrade Kit. Prior to deploying for Operation Iraqi Freedom, I installed your product in my Kevlar helmet. I was impressed by the comfort of the kit and its performance with mounted NVGs. I was the commanding officer of the Marine Corps artillery battery and frequently led convoys at night. As I led my battery north of An Nasiryha, my vehicle was hit with an RPG. Although I was seriously wounded, losing my right hand, I believe that your helmet liner spared me from additional wounds from the concussion. The blast shattered the dust goggles that were attached to my helmet but I only received one small cut below my ear. As I was evacuated back into Kuwait, corpsmen and other medical personnel kept trying to remove my helmet and give me something softer to rest my head on. Each time they tried I refused because I was more comfortable with your liner system... Your product truly made a difference for me and I would gladly recommend it tomy fellow Marines."
Capt. J. F., U. S. Marine Corps

“I’m a squad leader and paratrooper…I recently had the opportunity to test the BLSS® kit cushioning system in a most unpleasant way. I was involved in a mid-air collision about 50 feet above the ground. When that happened, our parachutes turned in on each other, collapsed at about 30 feet above ground and caused us to fall straight down. I did a rear left parachute landing fall and the force of impact caused my head to slap against the ground on the left…I was lightheaded for about 30 minutes and was able to jump again the next day. (I) have no doubt that your system prevented a more serious injury.”
—T. Sgt. R.P., USAF

"I am currently deployed to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and my unit is based out of Germany. I would like to let everyone at Oregon Aero know how much I appreciate the quality work that has gone into their products I have used for the last six years. The helmet (HGU-56P), which I wear daily, is outfitted with a full Oregon Aero upgrade. The SoftSeal
ear cushions work so well I have to wear ear plugs because the radios are now often too loud. The helmet has been on missions in 18 European countries, to include hostile fire zones in Korea, Kosovo and presently performing combat operations in Iraq. Your products were being used during some of the first cross-border combat operations, which ranged to within 80 miles south of Baghdad. Everyone there has my greatest appreciation for a job well done. And thanks for being Great Americans."
G.S., Chief Warrant Officer 2, Instructor/Pilot

helicopter   "I am a Marine helicopter pilot at Quantico, Va....I just wanted to say ‘thank you.’ The first day I used my helmet (with Oregon Aero’s Aviation Helmet Upgrade components), I flew over five hours. With my old helmet liner I would have been assured of deep red marks on my forehead, circles around my ears, and a nagging headache. After using your helmet and Ear Cup liners, I was surprised to find no red marks or nagging headache. Also the comfort and fit of your products cut out outside noise much better than before. I...am still passing round the good word about your products."
— Major A.J.G., Ground Safety Officer HMX-1

"After several missions consisting of open doors and windows during the flights and extended flight hours, the pilots have come back to me with only positive comments on your products (headset upgrade kits)....very comfortable and much improved noise attenuation with no exceptions."
C.C., AMI/COFR, U.S. Customs Service

"We saw a definite improvement in speech intelligibility over the standard HGU-56/P when the ZetaLiner™, SoftSeals™, and HushKit™ were installed (87% vs. 79%). In addition, your products consistently rated the most comfortable, and were felt to cut out more background aircraft noise than the CEP alone."
— Capt. D.B. USAFSAM/GE RAM 2002, Brooks AFB, TX

"I have just finished the installation of this kit (SoftSeal/HushKit Combo™) on my HGU-55P helmet. My feedback to you: SUPERB!"
Capt. H.R.A., CAP

With Oregon Aero upgrades, pilots of fixed wing fighters report reducing their audio output setting from 90-95% to a new average setting of 35-45%, with significantly improved comprehension.
North Dakota Air National Guard, Oregon Air National Guard, and others

"The installation of your kit (for an SPH-4®* helmet) greatly decreased the amount of outside noise. This allowed me to decrease the ICS volume for the first time."
— R.R., flight paramedic

"After the first flight with your ‘HushKit™’ in my SPH-5®* helmet, I knew I’d never go back to the original equipment. I’ve been able to turn the radio/intercom volume down by at least 25% and get better audio clarity. The SoftSeal™ ear pieces felt great even after a three-hour flight."
— J.M., flight medic

"Over the past 15 years I have flown over 30 different fixed and rotary wing aircraft across the spectrum of Combat to Developmental Test and Evaluation. The single biggest operational enhancement I have personally experienced is the Oregon Aero ZetaLiner™.
ZetaLiner™ helmet liner
The Oregon Aero® ZetaLiner® helmet liner
The ZetaLiner™ instantly eliminates the helmet induced fatigue, qualifying it as a ‘Combat Enhancement’. The fatigue associated with tactical NVG evolutions is primarily (caused by) a poorly fitting helmet.
Two additional Oregon Aero products are notable, the SoftSeal™ ear cushions and SoftSeat™ cushion. The...cushions contribute significantly to managing fatigue and ensuring a consistently tailored fit each time you strap on an aircraft. I recommend the ZetaLiner™ to anyone required to operate in a high workload environment wearing a helmet, especially if NVD’s are also required. It will make a believer out of you immediately."
— D.A., AH-1W WTI/ETP

"I flew with the Oregon Aero® ZetaLiner® helmet liner (and other upgrade components) in my HGU-68P helmet for the S-B today and was very impressed with the comfort and the sound protection. Usually, I’m turning up the volume on the radios while we are flying at higher airspeeds, but not so today. The liner and ear protection worked as advertised."
– Lt. F.O.

plaque    Oregon Aero was happy to receive this plaque after a 23.4 hour mission to support down range search and rescue during a space shuttle launch. Our seat cushions and headset upgrades allowed crew members to focus on their mission by taking away the pain usually associated with seats and headsets.

APECS I™ ejection seat

Oregon Aero APECS® I ejection seat cushioning system.
"I can only add that this is the first time in all my engineering experience that I have seen an evaluation go this well." – Evaluating engineer for the Oregon Aero APECS® I ejection seat cushioning system. Oregon Aero Brings Important Benefits
To Helmet-Mounted Cueing System Project

Oregon Aero is grateful to be able to contribute to improving the lives of military personnel. In the case of the U.S. Air Force and Navy’s Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System Project, pilots have a stable, comfortable and quieter helmet along with cutting edge technology, thanks to Oregon Aero. The helmet’s computer electronics cueing system enables pilots to target objects outside of their normal visual range.
In order to perform effectively, the helmet must be stable and not move as the pilot’s head moves. Oregon Aero provided not only stability to the helmet but also comfort, noise reduction, a lighter weight helmet system, and a helmet that can be modified to fit in minutes.
The new helmet and Oregon Aero’s equipment continue to be tested at the Naval Air Warfare Center at China Lake, California.
  See pilot comments below.

This Time Our "Customers" Are Military Pilots:
Here’s What They Have To Say

Pilots give glowing evaluations of Oregon Aero’s improvements to the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System project:
  • " Incredible sweat absorption properties…the wicking properties of the ZetaLiner® Helmet Liner eliminated nearly all sweat beads from rolling into my eyes under G’s."
  • "The extraneous noise damping properties of the ear cups were incredible."
  • "I could tell my (helmet) shell was not sliding around my head as I cranked my neck around to check six like it usually does."
  • "Quick and easy installation/modification time. My PR learned in one hour how to do the mod and completed one on his own in 15 minutes from start to finish."
  • "The Oregon Aero ZetaLiner™ and Ear Cups may be one of the best ‘finds’ of this program."
  • "I am not feeling the weight at all, not feeling a tug trying to rotate my head….I don’t even notice it’s on (during high performance, high-G maneuvers)."
  • "I experienced no fatigue, neck pain, loss of mobility, or change in G-tolerance while wearing the helmet."
  • "Voice warnings were much louder and clearer, and the aircraft was much quieter. All this…and less weight, too."

Mike Dennis and the Oregon Aero® BLSS® kit
Win Discovery Channel’s Invention Showdown

Discovery Channel logo   Mike Dennis, Oregon Aero, Inc. Founder and President, walked away the winner on the pilot of a Discovery Channel show, Invention Showdown.
Dennis and the Oregon Aero BLSS™ kit (Ballistic Liner Suspension System) competed against three other inventors. The show’s four-person panel of experts and the audience both selected the Oregon Aero® BLSS® Kit based on three criteria: 1) Did the invention solve the state purpose/problem that prompted the idea of the invention 2) Is the invention marketable 3) what was the motivation and persistence of the inventor. The
Oregon Aero® BLSS® Kit received 57 percent of the audience vote.

One factor in selecting the BLSS® Kit was the adaptability of the concept of the kit to any helmet, including football, hockey, bicycle, race car and other sports helmets, as well as construction hard hats and additional applications already being developed by the company.

"It was an interesting experience and a privilege to be around the other inventors and to be included in the show’s pilot," said Mike. "I have to admit, it was also fun to win."

The BLSS® Kit makes the helmet pain-free, positively buoyant, stable and safer (it reduces shock transmission dramatically). It is installed without helmet modifications, is air permeable and self-wicking and reduces helmet sound reverberation. The BLSS® Kitdesign features a four-point chin strap/harness with an integrated nape pad and seven highly engineered pads that replace the current helmet’s webbing system.
